NEW POPULATIONS ADVISORY COUNCIL

Dr. Ray Brassieur is an anthropologist at U Louisiana, Lafayette who was previously Regional Folklorist for New Orleans and has researched many cultural groups in the region and presented them at many festivals and in other formats.

Dr. Joyce Jackson, a folklorist and ethnomusicologist at Louisiana State U, Dept of Geography/ Anthropology specializes in the African diaspora and has researched the Haitian community of New Orleans. She has extensive experience researching cultural groups and presenting them to the public.

Dr. John Laudun is a folklorist at U Louisiana, Lafayette on faculty in the Dept of English, and associate director of the Center for Louisiana Studies. His studies have focused on material folk culture, foodways, and folk and literary narrative, especially in African American traditions.

Dr. Dayna Lee is the Regional Folklorist at Northwestern State U who specializes in Native American cultures and baskets. Dr. Lee will be conducting research in her region.

Dr. Solimar Otero is a folklorist at Louisiana State U, Dept of English who specializes in the African diaspora, Latino women's studies, and African and Caribbean folk religion.

Nalini Raghavan is an anthropologist who has researched East Indian culture in the United States and is an East Indian classical dancer and teacher in the Bharatanatyanm, Kalakshetra style.

Dr. Thomas Reese is executive director of the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane U in addition to being on the art history faculty. The Stone Center funds graduate studies in the Caribbean and Latin America and related communities in the United States.

Dr. Susan Roach is the Regional Folklorist at Louisiana Tech U who specializes in folklife of the American South, especially north Louisiana. She has presented cultural groups in both festival and exhibition formats and has also done research in Indian and Chinese cultural traditions.

Carlos Valladares is director of Ecos Latinos, a TV series broadcast in five parishes around New Orleans that focuses on Latino issues and communities.

Dr. Carolyn Ware is a folklorist at Louisiana State U in the Dept of English who has researched many cultural groups in Louisiana including Croatians and presented them in many formats.

Dr. Laura Westbrook is the Regional Folklorist at U New Orleans who has worked with Latino and Eastern European communities in the New Orleans area by helping them develop exhibits and public programs. She specializes in public education in programming and interpretation.
