Cornshuck Hat Only a handful of people still weave cornshucks in Louisiana, all of whom are African American. Several different methods are used by the various craftspeople. Leola Simmons of Downsville plaits the shucks and then coils the plait to make both wide and narrow brim hats. She wears the hats for gardening, fishing, or as dress hats for church.
