Small Old Time Hoop Net Hoop nets are used in moving water to catch fish. Few people still make the hoops of split white oak. This net was made by Vernie Gibson of Jena, Louisiana, who fished in Catahoula Lake. Vernie Gibson of Jena represents the subsistence lifestyle of north Louisiana's Anglo fishermen. Although south Louisiana is more commonly associated with fishing tools and techniques, until his death Gibson was a Catahoula Lke basin fisherman capable of building John boats and bateaux. He also made white oak catfish traps and hoop nets with cotton twine. Mr. Gibson, like most people who have lived off the land, could do a little bit of everything, including shingle riving, tool making, and gourd carving.
