Chitimacha Bear's Earring Basket
Chitimacha Bear's Earring Basket
by Ernestine Walls

Ernestine Darden Walls was a Chitimacha basketmaker who learned to make baskets from the women in her family. She was an accomplished weaver, and specialized in miniature baskets of great beauty. In the Chitimacha tradition, Mrs. Walls used only red, black, and yellow dyes to create the distinctive patterns, and created her baskets using split river cane. Mrs. Walls passed away ca. 1990.
